History Of The Estate

The smooth sandy beach with its on shore breeze inspired one Norman Thompson to start a business building aircraft here and sea-planes were launched from a slipway near where our sea gate is now placed.
NORMAN WAY and THOMPSON ROAD are named in honour of the aircraft man.
After the end of World War 1 the aircraft factory lost much of its business and the land was sold to a holiday company. This, in the latter part of the 20th century, became a Club 18-30, not what you might expect in Sleepy Middleton! Some of the aircraft hangers were still in use as communal areas, though some had been taken into Bognor and used similarly there.
Cheap Spanish holidays resulted in the land being sold off to the builders Crest in the 1990s.  Who were the company that built the estate in the 1990’s

There is a very interesting local postcard history site at https://middletonpostcards.wordpress.com/  Please take a look at the postcards of the Aircraft Factory and the holiday camp, it is well worth a visit. Also if you have any interesting historic postcards of the Middleton On Sea area, please share them with david.garn@hotmail.com, who is the editor of the postcards site.
